Dedicate some time for yourself

September 3, 2019 by Asila Calhoun

One of the most wonderful things about coaching is the dedicated time where your coach is 100% focused on you.

It’s your time to use however you want. Sometimes you go into a coaching session with a specific issue or topic in mind, laser focused. Other times, you stumble through various topics in the beginning of your session until something bubbles up as important to work through with your coach. No matter what occurs, that space, that time, is perfect. Each coaching session is just what you need in that moment.

At the end of a recent coaching session, a client shared that she had no idea she was still perseverating on an incident until she got into the session with me and she blurted it out. She decided to spend our coaching time working through next steps on how to resolve it. She was relieved to process the issue and come to a resolution, which was a surprise because she came into the session feeling like she didn’t know what she wanted to get out of coaching that day.

My clients often say they love that hour of coaching where they are not expected to do anything or be anything. It’s all about them. I often hear how decadent it feels to focus on themselves and their development and growth rather than that of a team member or project. Some clients describe time spent in self-reflection and discovery in a coaching session as selfish. I like to remind my clients that self-care isn’t selfish.

As your coach, my role is to help draw out the solutions, answers and ideas that are inside of you. I’m not solving your problem for you or mentoring or advising. I act as a conduit to your process of self-discovery. Sometimes that means I’m a thought-partner or sounding board. Sometimes it means I’m holding up a mirror for you in order to point out your blind spots. Other times, I’m a cheerleader. I have a direct, yet supportive approach. The space I create for you is psychologically safe and built on trust. But, it is all you. The work is yours to do.
